An Evening of Middle-Eastern Poetry

On Thursday, January 17, Marin Poetry Center will celebrate poetry of the Middle East. Poets and co-editors Deema Shehabi and Beau Beausoleil will read from their new anthology, Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here: Poets and Writers Respond to the March 5th, 2007, Bombing of Bagdad's 'Street of the Booksellers'. The book title refers to the famous street in Bagdad with a long tradition of selling books in the open, in a free exchange of ideas. On March 5, 2007, a car bomb exploded, killing or wounding… Show more many people and destroying thousands of books. The anthology seeks to show where Al-Mutanabbi Street starts in all of us. The related, poignant book art collection will be placed in the Iraq National Library in Bagdad before 2013. Mr. Beausoleil will present broadsides from this collection at our reading.
