Description:
Nonsemble 6 formed in San Francisco in Fall 2009 as members of the San Francisco Conservatory's prestigious Chamber Music program. The group formed in order to perform Schoenberg's Pierrot lunaire,… Show more and, staying true to the works origins as cabaret, early performances as an ensemble were in Bay Area cafés and bars as part of the Classical Revolution. A tour of Oregon to perform and lecture at Willamette University and in Astoria followed, as well as performances in Baltimore, MD, a Kennedy Center debut, an invitation to be artists-in-residence at the Astoria Music Festival, several performances with composer Mason Bates, both at the California Academy of Sciences and at Mercury Soul, Bates' series of electro-acoustic lounge events, and a tour to perform and lecture at colleges in Illinois.
As part of the vision to collaborate with other art forms, a set of 21 works of abstract art to accompany 2010's performances of Pierrot lunaire was commissioned from Los Angeles artist Mara Elana. This cross-genre collaboration continues with this year's commissioning of a set of works to be displayed alongside performances of Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time by Bay Area artist Olivia Lam. Currently, Nonsemble 6 is expanding the repertoire for their ensemble, with recent commissions including a new dramatic work by Bay Area composer Mark Ackerley based on the fairy tale Little Matchstick Girl, and performing semi-improvised punk music in San Francisco gallery venues. In January 2011, Nonsemble 6 completed a project at Sanchez Elementary School, where they performed parts of Pierrot Lunaire and taught students about using expressive elements of playing music to portray characters and stories. The class of 3rd graders then collaborated with N6 to compose their own expressionist melodrama.
Nonsemble 6 is a fiscally sponsored affiliate of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the service of chamber music in California.
