Lead and supporting actor Roy Scheider is best known for his role as Police Chief Martin Brody in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster movie "Jaws" (1975).
"You're gonna need a bigger boat," one of Scheider's dryly-delivered lines in that film, was voted number 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies.
Scheider was Oscar-nominated for his supporting role opposite Gene Hackman in "The French Connection" (1971) and for his lead role in Bob Fosse's autobiographical musical "All That Jazz" (1979). Scheider, cast against type, performed his own dancing and singing opposite Leland Palmer, Ann Reinking, and Ben Vereen.
In addition to these roles, he made key appearances in "Klute" opposite Jane Fonda (1971), "The Seven Ups" (1973), "Marathon Man" (1976), "Blue Thunder" (1983), and "2010" (the sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey", 1984).
His appeal extended to television when he was cast as Nathan Bridger, the captain of a futuristic submarine in the popular series "Sea Quest DSV".
