The co-writer and director of the Australian export "The Black Balloon" grew up with two autistic siblings. While this hardly ensures a compelling or honest film about a similar family dynamic, at its sharpest Elissa Down's feature directorial debut is guided by intense, rough-edged emotional swings that feel authentically alive, even when the script settles for tidiness.
