Amateur sleuth Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts) accompanies her father (Tate Donovan) on a business trip to Los Angeles and stumbles across evidence in the case of a movie star's long-unsolved death. Having read nearly the whole series as a girl, I was prepared to be disappointed by this updated rendition of Nancy Drew. Instead, I really enjoyed the movie, and was impressed with the attention to the details that I remembered most from the book - including Nancy's penny loafers, her roadster, and her nice boyfriend, Ned. And of course her sleuthing kit and her hunches.
Some parts were a bit cheesy for my adult liking, but overall it was very entertaining, and I don't mind that the movie mixed some of the old with the new. I wish there were more stories like this one - where a smart, confident, brave and kind-hearted girl is at the center.

OF COURSE your brother hated Nancy Drew. The boys always had her pegged as the kind of girl who would someday make them feel small, a know-it-all, goodie-two-shoes. Meanwhile, you loved her. For many of us, this was the first battle of the sexes. (Full review)
