No Reservations

Master chef Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones) runs her life and her kitchen with intimidating intensity. However, a recipe for disaster may be in the works when she becomes the guardian of her young niece (Abigail Breslin) while crossing forks with the brash sous-chef (Aaron Eckhart) who just joined her staff. Though romance blooms in the face of rivalry, Kate needs to look outside the kitchen to find true happiness.

Jul 27, 2007 - Contra Costa Times - By Mary F. Pols

When they succeed, romantic comedies leave us hungry for love, even when we've adjusted our expectations of companionship downward from telegenic movie stars. The satisfying culinary romance "No Reservations," featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart, divides and conquers by making us crave the utterly attainable -- spaghetti with fresh basil -- as intensely as we do either of its unattainable leads. No Reservations ... except for mine ...

This is a pre-emptive review on a movie boldly borrowing Anthony Bourdain's title for his Travel Channel television show "No Reservations" after boldly taking the storyline from German director Sandra Nettelbeck's fabulous 2002 film, "Mostly Martha".
It'd be unfair to say the Americanized version is better or worse than the sub-titled German version -- hey, don't tell me about sub-titles: whaddya think you've learned to do while watching contemporary teevee with those notices of upcoming episodes of other shows preening from the bottom right of your screen? Anyway, whether from Netflix or a competitor, do yourself a favor and rent "Mostly Martha" and view it from very start until the last notes of music are gone --- and then tell me which version you honestly enjoy more. Me? I admit I'm gonna see "No Reservations" but it'll be to see Catherine Zeta-Jones, not for the movie.
