Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), a man both ruthless and mysterious, has ties to one of London's most dangerous crime families. Nikolai crosses paths with Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife, who accidentally uncovers potentially damaging evidence against the family, forcing him to set in motion a plan of murder, deceit and retribution.

"Eastern Promises" is just the kind of movie we've come to expect from the teaming of Viggo Mortensen and his "A History of Violence" director, David Cronenberg, dark, suspenseful and filled with blood, not just the kind that gets spilled, but the kind that pulses through the body. The two movies are both about violence getting in the way of the desire for the essentials of a life -- love, family -- in a sense, foul passions interfering with pure passions.
