Dan Burns (Steve Carell), a widower and advice columnist, meets a beautiful stranger (Juliette Binoche) in a bookstore and is instantly smitten. Unfortunately the woman, named Marie, is already involved with Dan's charismatic brother (Dane Cook) . As a weekend family gathering gets underway, Dan and Marie try to hide their mutual attraction, but fall in love anyway.

Peter Hedges' new film "Dan in Real Life" is set during a family reunion on an autumn weekend in New England. The family is so big we're never sure how many siblings, in-laws and offspring it actually contains. They move as an indistinguishable pack, following as closely on each other's heels as the Marx brothers. This clan, like this movie, is overeager for slapstick and sentiment. (Full review)
