Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 - Contra Costa Times - By Mary F. Pols

Although Ian McEwan's World War II-era novel "Atonement" is a powerful read, it's one of those literary works that doesn't seem intended to be translated to the screen. Not only is it dominated by minuscule dramas of perception and interpretation, but the narrator is an unlikable child whose ambitious, fanciful mind wreaks havoc on many lives. (Full review)

Atonement

Although this was a beautifully filmed movie, it was a painfully slow and boring story. The acting was robotic and artificial, and the actors looked like posers with their long, overly dramatic looks and pauses. I felt no chemistry at all between the characters and thought the story was stilted and uninvolving.
I do not understand all the talk about academy award nominations for this drama, other than that of cinematography, which I felt was the main theme of the story.
